Mojang Studios’ game Minecraft has been one of the most popular games in the world since its release in 2009. It is also considered one of the most—if not the most—successful sandbox games, allowing players to build homes, families, farms, and even their own cities.

Shortly after the game’s launch, Hollywood began working on a film adaptation, although the plot remained a mystery for quite some time. The concept went through numerous revisions until active production began in 2023 with a finalized script.

Jack Black took on the lead role, and the film finally hit theaters in March 2025. Reactions have been mixed: many viewers say Minecraft feels like a new Jumanji, with a similar tone, humor, and simplicity—though some argue it’s rather empty in terms of story and deeper meaning.

Despite the divided opinions, the movie has already grossed over $550 million, making it a major box office hit. There’s little doubt it will recoup its $150 million budget.

Take a chance and see what kind of “world” Warner Bros. has built in this new film.
