Love, relationships, and even marriage — these timeless themes have always fascinated cinema and television. Few things are as mysterious or complex as building a strong, loving partnership with another person. Sometimes these stories become rom-coms, sometimes dramas, and sometimes dark comedies — like The Roses, the latest film from director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Trumbo, Bombshell).
The film follows Theo and Ivy, a middle-aged couple played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, as their marriage hits a rocky patch. Their friends are worried, the couple themselves are often frustrated, and audiences will likely find themselves laughing at the film’s sharp humor and absurd situations.

The Roses is a modern reimagining of Danny DeVito’s 1989 classic The War of the Roses, which was a huge success in its time, earning several nominations and based on the novel by Warren Adler.

Will this new take manage to be both funny and emotionally insightful? We’ll find out this August. In the meantime, go watch the trailer — with stunning visuals and a powerhouse cast, it’s already worth your attention.
